Letter to the Middle School: Rock Rivalry

Conor Kelly, Editor-in-chief

Dear Middle School students,

I’m sure you have heard plenty about Rock Rivalry as it has just passed and you’re getting closer and closer to doing it yourself. I want to give some advice when dealing with Rock Rivalry and what I’ve learned in my 4 years of participating.

First off, get involved! Rock Rivalry is so much fun and it’s a great way to get to know your classmates better and probably make new friends. I’ve been on every single committee at one point or another and I can confidently say each one is so much fun. It’s also so cool when you go on stage or in the small gym to see the work that YOU did on display.

Second, don’t personally take on the workload. I am guilty of this unfortunately. I get very stressed about things not being done so I try to do them all myself, but that’s only going to end in more stress and a poor quality of the finished product. Just ask for help from your classmates and make sure everybody is on the same page. Creating a timeline or to-do list is a great idea.

Third, cooperate. When at rehearsals or committee meetings, get the work done. You’re probably with your friends all the time, so when you’re at rehearsals and meetings, work on your show or the committee focus, don’t leave a couple of people to do all the work. Especially when in the auditorium, pay attention. I don’t think anyone wants to look like they don’t know what they’re doing on stage, right?

Finally, have fun. Rock Rivalry is supposed to be fun, so don’t let it get to you too much. I, once again, am guilty of getting too stressed over things just because I am unsure of how it is going to turn out. Everything always comes together in the end so please just make yourself a list and don’t get stressed.

I won’t be here next year to see all the work everybody puts in, but I will definitely be coming back to see the final show and the small gym. Rock Rivalry will always hold a special place in my heart because it helped me figure out that I want to put on live shows as a career. Maybe it will help you find your passion too. Just give it a try and you won’t be disappointed.
