East Rockaway has recently welcomed a new program, focused on inclusion and fostering friendships, Best Buddies. I am so honored to have been chosen to be president of this incredible program, and below I will discuss what Best Buddies is, how it will work in our school, and why it matters.
Best Buddies is not just an East Rockaway organization- it is an international nonprofit organization that is operating in nearly 3,000 chapters! Best Buddies promotes friendships among all students and anyone is welcome to join. We will work with students who may have intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, and create opportunities for friendship, development, inclusivity, and support.
At East Rockaway, we will mostly do activities as a whole group. We will mainly work with students in the High School, but may plan some activities with students at Rhame Avenue Elementary. As of right now, we do not have a set meeting schedule, but meetings and activities could be after school, during school, or a mix of both. As we get a better idea of the program and begin having meetings, information will be available and accessible on morning announcements, parent square, etc., and if there are any questions, you can contact the advisors of the club, Mrs. Freudenberg and Mrs. Rullo, or myself.
Best Buddies is such a wonderful organization and we are so excited to begin planning activities. This program has done so much for students of all abilities, and we can’t wait to see what it can bring to East Rockaway. We are looking forward to creating lasting friendships and connections, making memories, and promoting inclusion for all!
