There’s a feature on Snapchat that you may or may not have noticed lately. When you add a new friend on the app, you can check your new friend’s astrological sign. But where did that come from? What is a horoscope? How did Snapchat know what your friend’s horoscope is? What is your horoscope? And most importantly, why should you even care?

To begin, horoscopes are based on astrology: the study of planets and other celestial bodies in space and how they can interpret what goes on in our world. The horoscopes are contained in an astrological chart that can determine your sun, moon, and ascendant sign based on the positions of the sun, moon, stars, and planets during your date, location, and time of birth.

Most people know their sun sign, it’s the easiest to figure out! The chart below shows the dates in which each constellation is shown and whenever your birthday is and whatever constellation shows up is your sun sign.

However, when you want to figure out what your moon and ascendant sign are (or others) you have to put in a lot more detail. To figure out what those signs are you can search up “moon sign calculator”, “ascendant sign calculator” or something else, choose any website, put in your time of birth and what town you were born in, and your sign should be calculated. The only hard part is finding out from your parents what time you were born. It personally took me a while before figuring out my other signs but I would soon find out that I am a Virgo sun, Aries moon, and Capricorn ascendant.

Each sign is supposed to have characteristics and depending on where the sign is placed (in your moon, sun, or ascendant) means different things. When I first started getting into horoscopes, I realized that I didn’t relate entirely to my horoscope but once I figured out that there were different placements and I had different signs in different placements, I noticed that I related to my charts a lot more. Your sun sign is supposed to represent the basis of your personality, your moon sign represents your inner emotions and your ascendant represents the way others see you and what sign you may act like the most.

There are tons of little facts about each zodiac sign! For example, each 3 represents a different element. The fire signs being Aries, Leo, Sagittarius; the earth signs being Capricorn, Virgo, and Taurus; the water Cancer, Pisces, and Scorpio; and the air signs being Libra, Gemini, and Aquarius. They all also represent their own animal/human and have their own symbols.

Horoscopes are something you can incorporate into your everyday life. Astrologers make predictions on how each year, month, week and even day can affect your horoscope and you can find this information at the touch of your fingertips on your phone! I hope more people in the future learn about the horoscopes and incorporate it into their everyday lives. Even if you don’t believe in it, it’s still fun to look at!
