East Rockaway’s girls’ varsity basketball team is on the hunt to add to their banner hanging in the gym. The Lady Rocks have had an incredible season with an overall record of 13-8. They are working to add the cherry on top with the Long Island Championship. With their league record being 8-4, the team was able to clench the #2 seed in their conference. But this isn’t new for the Lady Rocks; in fact, last season, the team made it to the 2nd round of playoffs. They were able to defeat Carle Place in the first round, but eventually lost to Cold Spring Harbor at Hofstra in the Nassau County semi-finals.
But the team hasn’t quit since then, as head coach Cheri Poland and assistants Fred Cange, Alessia Drevnyak, and Brooke Dejulio organized many workouts and shoot arounds through the off season. Along with this, the team participated in the Freeport summer league as well. With the season starting back in November, the program has put even more work and time in, whether it is coming early to practice for film-sessions or staying late to get shots up.
This season, the Lady Rocks have already made it past round 1 after winning in the Nassau County semi-finals against Oyster Bay (42-31). This Friday, the team will go on to see Carle Place at Farmingdale State College to fight for the Nassau County title. With Emma Poland and Maya Motherway leading the Rocks and Caitlin Leary leading the Frogs, it is going to be a great game. East Rockaway defeated Carle Place earlier this season at the Rock Palace, but more recently, it was the opposite on the Frog’s home court. Keeping in mind that the Rocks ended the Frogs season last year, the #2 and #1 seed (Carle Place) face off is going to be a battle. Come support the East Rockaway Girls Basketball team, this Friday, at Farmingdale State College, at 6:00!
