If you haven’t seen recent sports news, there have been many trades going on in the baseball world. Winter meetings are ongoing and teams are trying to fix their teams for the next season. As true Yankees fans, Hal Steinbrenner and Brian Cashman are trying their best to make this franchise what it once was. The Yankees are a 27-time World Series champion team, and they for sure have the potential to get another, but they needed some help from trading and getting new players for the team.
The Yankees were looking at star Juan Soto who is a 25-year-old lefty bat with massive power. He was recently with the Padres but started his career with the Nationals. The Yankees had a close eye on him for a long time, but couldn’t get him due to his contract. They finally pulled the trigger this year due to the horrendous season last year since we need the help. The Yankees traded a few players such as Michael King, Jhony Brito, Randy Vasquez, Drew Thorpe and Kyle Higashioka in exchange for Juan Soto and Trent Grisham. This is a very good deal but the deal is only for one year. In order to make this contract worth it, they need to re-sign him after this year is over. There has been speculation for a 15 year deal worth $575 million so the Yankees should definitely talk with him and his agent mid year to negotiate a contract extension.
Brian Cashman also added another outfielder, former Boston Red Sox Alex Verdugo. Verdugo is a very good outfielder with a batting average of about a .260-.280, which is pretty solid compared to players the Yankees already had. He is also a lefty bat, which is something the Yankees have been looking for.
This addition, along with the many additions they are looking to add, will for sure make this team what it once was: a franchise that is use to winning. I am glad the head honchos in the Yankees have finally put their foot down and are actually doing something to save this team and make fans enjoy the games. I am looking forward to a very good season filled with endless possibilities and limitless amount of future adds before spring season.
