Two Sports, Two Families

Stephanie Lynch, Staff Writer

In a small school like East Rockaway, there are more opportunities to be involved than other schools.  This year the opportunity to play two sports in the spring presented itself for girls.  Flag football was finally given as an option at East Rockaway.  As the team likes to say: We are making herstory.  This means we are the first girls to be on the team and will be remembered for starting the program.  Along with this sport, some girls are playing softball or running track.  This has never happened for the spring season and the girls are very grateful for the opportunity.

Although balancing both sports is hard, both coaches have made the experience worth every minute. From being flexible with scheduling to making sure all the girls still play, the coaches have made playing both sports less stressful. The girls on each team are also very supportive about playing both sports. No one is mad or upset if you play before your next practice because they are understanding of the situation.

The coaches also understand that from playing two sports you get tired.  If I ever need to sit out at practice or take it easy, they understand.  The girls on both teams are like family already and always cheer you on no matter what. Whenever I have a game in either sport, they will always wish me good luck.

I hope the opportunity presents itself next year to play two sports because being able to be a part of two families is a great experience.
