Marissa Meyers has written multiple books, including the Lunar Chronicles, Heartless, and the Renegades trilogy. This review discusses the first book in the Renegades trilogy. Renegades is a young adult science fiction novel first published in 2017.
This book is about humans who have various abilities. After their society crumbled due to fear of these prodigies, “Anarchists” arose to stop the mistreatment of prodigies. These Anarchists were violent in their means to justice so a new group of prodigies emerged: the Renegades. They were able to defeat the Anarchists and restore peace and order for everyone, except for the villains they overthrew. This story follows Nova, who has a reason for her hatred of the Renegades. She’s on a mission for retribution. But as she approaches her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade who believes in justice. Yet, Nova’s devotion is to the Anarchists who can end them both.
I had a wonderful time reading this book. The story line of the book was intriguing and I couldn’t wait for what was to come. There were some twists that I wasn’t expecting. And the characters were fascinating as well, they had such depth and I wanted everything to end well for them. They were very realistic with the values and opinions which made them easy to love. I also loved the relationship between the characters with the found family aspect. Meyer’s writing was also very enjoyable and easy to follow. Her writing made it easy to imagine what was occurring in the story.
Overall, this book series is now one of my favorites. I rated the whole series five stars on my Goodreads. I can see myself rereading it in the future due to my fondness for this series and its characters. It was one of those books where you want to see the outcome but don’t want to leave that world behind. I highly recommend this severely underrated series to anyone who wants to read about heroes and villains in an unexpected and comforting story. Some books that are similar to the Renegades trilogy include the Darkest Minds series and the Lunar Chronicles by the same author due to the dystopian setting.
