House of Salt and Sorrows, written by Erin A. Craig, was published in 2019. It is a young adult fantasy with some horror and the first book in an eventual trilogy. Due to the slight mix of fantasy and horror, it’s a wonderfully atmospheric book to read during autumn.
This story follows Annaleigh, who lives in a manor by the sea with her sisters. What was formerly twelve sisters has dwindled, and with four lives cut short, loneliness fills their home. Others murmur of a supposed curse haunting the residents of Highmoor. Plagued by ghostly fabrications, Annaleigh becomes convinced that her sisters’ casualties were no mere accident. She races to unravel the truth before she or her sisters are the next to meet their demise.
This book was great to read during autumn due to its slightly eerie feel and the mystery that has you leafing through the pages to uncover the ending. On Goodreads, I rated this book four stars because I highly enjoyed the story. It kept me hooked and lingering to know what would ensue towards the end. I wasn’t sure what to think of some of the characters and my opinions were frequently changing. However, this isn’t a bad thing, in fact, it created complex characters that made them seem human with all their imperfections. As with most books, it made me feel things and brought me to tears. This enhances my rating on books because that’s the reason I read.
Overall, I would recommend this book to others. Especially during autumn to enhance one’s reading experience.
