I know I am just another person telling you this, but high school really does fly by. I feel like just yesterday I was a freshman worried about where her classes were, and now I am a senior worried about where I am going to go to college. When it comes to applying to college there are so many things I am grateful that I did and others that I wish I had done. So although you have a guidance counselor that is an expert, I am going to give you some tips coming from a East Rockaway student herself.
- Start a list of everything you have participated in, any award you’ve received, or any position you’ve held at the end of each school year. I cannot stress enough about how doing something so simple made filling out the lengthy common application so much easier. It will make filling up your resume so much easier!
- Tour schools early! It may seem easier to tour the schools after you apply and receive an acceptance, but just tour some local schools prior to even applying. Even if you aren’t sure if you’re interested, it will give you an idea of what you may and may not like. Along with that, it will show you what is out there.
- Request information from every school you may be interested in, and do it early! Requesting information from schools is so simple. By doing so, you will be put on their radar and you will receive a lot of stuff in the mail and in your email as well. Some schools may even waive your application fee. Do this early on too, the earlier the better… which brings me to my next tip.
- Start everything early! Guidance counselors will give you the proper time frame so you are not stressed during your senior year. All you have to do is listen! For example, finish your college essay rough draft before the end of the summer. It will put you in great shape! If you finish it completely, that’s even better.
- SATs: Although some schools are test optional, a good SAT score can set you apart from the rest with regard to acceptance and merit scholarships. But the dates and test locations for the SATs fill up super quickly, so as soon as the date you are looking to take opens… sign up!
- Do your own research! If a school may interest you even the littlest bit, do research! Every little bit of information you could want can be found on schools websites, so do a deep dive. Look at what their programs offer, size, admission, tuition, and anything else you might be wondering.
- Application fees can pile up quickly, but don’t let this intimidate you. Schools may offer free application to those who tour, request information, or simply email an admissions counselor. Schools may even have free application dates (for example, SUNYs have a free application week!)
- Lastly, if you are looking to play sports in college… email coaches! Don’t wait to be recognized and just shoot your shot even if you don’t think you are good enough because you never know what kind of players and skills that teams are looking for. Most college coaches are very responsive and open to any possible recruits.
Yes, it might be stressful to make a decision that will monumentally shift your life, but remember to ask others for help, work hard, and follow the tips above. Doing so will make this process a whole lot easier so you are able to enjoy your senior year!
