I know that studying is not anyone’s definition of fun, but regardless, if you want to get the best grades in your classes, it is unavoidable. Seeing as how the midterms are coming up, I thought it would be nice to list the best scientifically proven study methods so that you can get 100 on all your future exams.
The first study method is called the…
Pomodoro method. This is a type of technique that breaks your study session into chunks allowing for more efficient studying. Typically, one would study for 25 minutes followed by a 5-minute break, and then repeat. After four repetitions, taking a longer break of 15-30 minutes is recommended. This method prevents you from exhausting yourself as your studying becomes more organized and manageable.
The second study method is called…
Spaced practice. This method is used to efficiently allow you to prepare for your exam by studying well in advance. Early on in your studying, you devote multiple study sessions during a few weeks or days before the test. This allows you to become exposed to the material early on while giving yourself sufficient time to learn the content and review it. You do not have to review the material every day consecutively, as long as you are reviewing the content at least every three days.
The third study method is called…
Color-coded notes. Although this method doesn’t sound like much, it can especially come in handy to all the visual learners out there. As self-explanatory as it sounds, this note-taking technique allows you to design, color, and organize your notes to your liking. For example, you can organize topics by color, highlight important information in yellow and write down key points in blue. Your studying can go the extra level just by applying this colorful method to your study routine.
The fourth study method is called…
Active Recall – my personal favorite
With this method you force your brain to recall the information you want to remember. It can be as simple as speaking the information to yourself in easier terms, using flashcards, doing practice tests or writing down what you remember. This method is especially important to help you memorize the information in the long-term memory. With this method, you stimulate your memory.
Quick tips before an exam:
- Get a good night’s sleep – this may be the most frequent piece of advice you get – but it is for good reason. Getting an adequate amount of sleep helps to stay focused, improve concentration, and improve academic performance.
- Prepare your things the night before -you don’t wan’t to be rushing in the morning and worrying if you have everything you need
- Eat a good breakfast to ensure you have energy and better concentration as hunger can be one of the biggest distractions.
- Repeat positive affirmations – Avoid negative thoughts and saying “ I can’t.” Remind yourself that you are prepared, ready, and that you’re going to try your best.
- Take a quick look through your notes BUT don’t stress yourself out!
Taking all this into account, I hope that you study hard for your exams and that your efforts will pay off! Believe in yourself and remember that a grade does not define you!
GOOD LUCK!
