Hundreds of steps can be heard as you leave the Subway. The crisp winter breeze hit my face as laughter and bells filled the air. Living in Long Island, I have been to the city countless times before, but this time was different. It was December 25, 2022. That morning I woke up at 7 am, not even having time to open Christmas presents, and headed directly to the city. My family had previously purchased tickets to the well-known Radio City Rockettes show and we planned to celebrate Christmas in New York City.
The temperature was only to be described as frigid, and a cloud of fog could be noticed as I exhaled. I wasn’t sure if it was the cooling temperatures or the dragging line to see the show, but I was eager to go inside. When we were finally able to enter it was very warm with an inviting atmosphere. There were crowds of people filling each corner of the tall entrance. As I glanced around I saw an extravagant chandelier dangling from the elegant high ceiling. It was truly amazing. We were instructed to go up the stairs to enter the theater. Similarly, the theater was equally impressive, with Christmas decorations and dim lights throughout. As we piled inside, Christmas-themed 3D glasses were handed to us. The show starts with by using the glasses as Santa Claus emerges and soars through New York City. This was just the beginning of an overall talented and astonishing performance. After 2 hours of amazement, we left the theater impressed and filled with the Christmas spirit. Not having eaten on this busy day, we decided to walk the streets of New York City.
We decided to find food near Rockefeller Center. After eating in one of the only places open on Christmas, we headed over to the very noticeable tree in the middle of the center. This was the Rockefeller Christmas tree and it has been a symbol of festivity, joy, and the holiday season for decades. With the twinkling lights and vast size, it was truly breathtaking and definitely a must-see. After waiting in another spiraling line, my family and I were able to get a picture in front of the tree. Although we did not go to the Rockefeller skating rink, it was just adjacent to the large Christmas tree and equally as majestical.
After experiencing and watching events in NYC, I have come to understand the hype of Christmas in New York City. I am lucky that these dazzling, awe-inspiring landmarks which represent all the holiday season is about are in such close vicinity. Overall, the Christmas events in Rockefeller Center and Radio City truly lived up to my expectations. Even with the long lines and frigid temperatures, I would recommend all to visit New York City during the holiday season at least once in a lifetime, as it’s truly an experience. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!
