“Uncertain Times”

A poem in the spirit of Poetry Madness and this year’s theme: healing

Adriana Calabrese, Staff Writer

they call it uncertain times,

a two word summary of what the world is going through

but what would they think

if only they really knew

so excited to be off from school

for something we thought was just like the flu

we never went back.

i wish it wasn’t true

these uncertain times

have me feeling a way

that as a matter of fact

makes me uncomfortable to say

trapped in my own head

all hours of the day

everything i once knew,

was quickly taken away

when i don’t see my friends at school i think,

“i don’t know why i even came”

i don’t recognize anyone with a mask

it’s hard to match half of a face to the right name

my bedroom is also my classroom

and my classroom doesn’t even look the same

with plastic dividers and marks on the floor

i’m desperate for someone to blame

dear uncertain times

please give me my life back

i wanna be young and have fun

please cut me some slack!

you’ve taken so many lives

there’s too many emotions to unpack

so much stress and worry

joy is something we lack

everyone is trying to help

the teachers do their best

but what no one sees

is that they are hurting just as much as the rest

they don’t see their students smiling faces

which might make them feel depressed

because we are the reason they teach

and they hate to see us stressed

they call it uncertain times

when there’s not enough time to explain

the change that this has brought

the struggle, the pain.

be nice everyone you meet

you never know what’s going on in their brain

for these uncertain times

shall cease to remain.
