How to Have a Safe Spooky Season
Keeping the Spirit of Halloween Alive During a Pandemic
October 27, 2020
Our world was rocked when Covid-19 came around. No one could have expected life would have ever been like this. These times are anything but normal and Americans are getting creative by thinking of ways to return to some sort of normalcy. With the holidays just around the corner and with Halloween only a few days away, here are some ideas to make sure you have a safe, spooky Halloween season.
- Plan a socially distant backyard party: A fun way to share the spooky spirit is to have a socially distant backyard horror movie showing. All you need is a projector or cell phone projector. Next, hang up a white flat sheet, blanket, or tarp in your backyard to use as your screen. This is a DIY movie projector, but you can always just use a television. Have over a few close family members or friends to enjoy the movie (just be careful not to jump into a friend’s arms during the scary parts!) You can hand out individually packaged snacks or candy for everyone to enjoy during the movie!
- What is Halloween without trick or treating? If you are still planning on going trick or treating or handing out candy here are some ways to stay safe. Having one communal candy bowl will not work this year. Instead, try spreading out candy all over your front lawn in small plastic bags. Another contactless way to hand candy out on Halloween is to make a slide like contraption using tubes to pass out candy to your spooky guests. This will allow you to stand at the top of your porch or stoop so you can slide candy through the tube into the kids’ baskets.
- Dressing up and going trick or treating on Halloween is fun for many kids, but of course under these circumstances, it is going to be trickier (pun intended). So instead of wearing a regular Halloween mask, try decorating a face mask to go with your costume using stickers, glitter, paint, pipe cleaners, and more. This will keep you safe while keeping in the spooky spirit!
Nothing about these past few months has been normal (in fact, it may have seemed like a horror movie to many of us), but that doesn’t mean Halloween has to be cancelled. Hopefully, with these suggestions, you all have a somewhat normal and safe spooky season!
