Buyers Guide To Gaming PCs

Atticus Gamache, Staff Writer

Before I start, keep in mind that there is a computer part shortage, so it will be harder to custom build one, also the prices are through the roof, and it’s hard to get parts online for a good price. Also, before reading, take into consideration that I am 12, and I don’t know everything, but based on my research these parts are good. Look at other sources, too. There are many YouTube videos on this topic.

With the holidays rolling around, some people might be looking for a gaming PC for Christmas. There are many options so I will be covering a lot of them, whether that’s pre-built, or custom, what GPUs and CPUs, and aesthetics. Of course, I can’t list every part and every different option, but I will cover the GPU, CPU, and RAM.

CPUS

First off, we will start with CPU’s. CPU stands for core-processing-unit. They are the brain of the computer. The core count and clock speed determines how good the PC is.  There are many different options, whether that is Intel or Ryzen, and how many cores they are. Also, always remember that you don’t want a GPU that is more powerful than a CPU. That will cause it to bottleneck, and it won’t perform at its fullest. I will list one Intel, and one Ryzen CPU for 2 different budgets.

Budget

Ryzen 5 2600

For a budget build, The Ryzen 5 2600 is a great choice. It is one of the best bang-for-your-buck CPUs. It has 6 cores, and a 3.4 ghz base clock. It has 12 threads too. It is a great choice if you are going for a budget gpu, like a GTX 1650, or GTX 1060, and GTX 1070.   Pricing should be around 200 dollars, don’t spend more on it. I’ll leave a recommended build for this CPU down below.

Intel Core i5-10500

The Core i5-10500 is a 6 core,  3.1 ghz, 12 thread cpu. It is one of Intel’s best options.  It has a great price to performance ratio, another great choice for a budget GPU. It is a good CPU for GPU like the GTX 1060, and even as new as the RTX 2060. I’ll leave a recommended build for it down below.

Ryzen 5 5600x

The Ryzen 5 5600 is in my opinion the best CPU for gaming, and even streaming. It comes with 6 cores, and 12 threads, which sounds familiar to the 2600, but has a base clock speed of 3.7 ghz, and more! If you are an experienced builder, or know someone who is good at building PCs, you can overclock it! (Overclocking a CPU is messing with the settings in the BIOS – if you choose to do it, read an article on it.) When overclocked, it can run at 4.6 ghz! I will leave a recommended build down below.

Intel core i7 10700k

The Intel core i7 10700k is a great choice. It has 8 cores and 16 threads. It’s clock speed is 3.8ghz, and a max clock speed of 5.1! This fast and powerful CPU is one of the best high-end CPUs on the market. It’s expensive, so be careful when assembling the computer. It’s great for gaming, streaming, video editing, and more.  I will leave a build down below.

GPUs

Now for the fun part, the GPU. GPU stands for graphics processing unit. It controls how the graphics in your game looks. The GPU scene is ugly, so I wish you luck trying to get one. The main things to keep in mind is the company manufacturing it, the CPU, and the power of it.  There is Nvidia and Radeon. I will list 2 options for both companies, one more mid range, and one more high-end.

GTX 1070 ti

The GTX 1070 ti is a great graphics card. It is a little old now, but still very capable. Your only option to get one is used, but if you get a good deal, you can get one for around $200-$350.  It comes with 8gb vram, and has an 8 gbps memory speed.  It can run games really well, and can run games at 60-80 fps. It is one of the best budget options in my opinion. I will leave a build down below.

Radeon 6600xt

The Radeon 6600 xt is one of the best mid range cards available right now. It is a powerful card, more powerful than the RTX 3060. It comes with 8 gb of VRAM. You can run most games at 90+ fps. It is one of the best GPUs on the mid range market. If you get one at MSRP, it will be $329. Unfortunately, it is new, so that means it is hard to find, and extra hard to find at MSRP. If you get one, you are very lucky. I will leave a build down below.

RTX 3070 ti

On the high-end market, the RTX 3070 ti is one powerhouse of a GPU. Coming in at 600 dollars (MSRP, not including raised prices) it is one of the best high end GPUs. It comes with 8gb vram, but faster than the 3060. You can run a lot of games at 144 fps.  If you can get your hands on one, you will have a powerful machine. I will leave a build down below.

Radeon 6900 xt

The 6900 xt is one of the best Radeon GPUs. Coming in at 1000 dollars, it is super powerful. It has 16 GB of GDDR6 memory. It can easily run most games at 144+ fps. It is really expensive, even at MSRP, but it is worth the price. I will leave a build down below.
